Sailing Adventure: From Tenerife to Cape Verde on the Morgenster

As the Morgenster lies ready for departure in the vibrant port of Santa Cruz on the island of Tenerife, your adventure to the Cape Verde Islands begins. This leg of the journey is known for its beautifully calm and pleasant sailing conditions. Being further south, the weather is wonderfully warm, with mild temperatures that invite you to spend much of your time on deck, soaking in the experience. With the Northeast Trade Winds and the gentle push of the Canary Current at our back, we’ll sail under optimal conditions for an unforgettable journey across the open sea.

Enjoying Life at Sea

Once we set sail from Tenerife, you’ll quickly notice the tranquility of these waters. Unlike busier shipping lanes, the ocean here is more serene, but there’s still plenty to see if you keep your eyes peeled. Seabirds, such as petrels and shearwaters, will accompany us, and you’ll often spot dolphins riding the bow waves or flying fish gliding just above the water’s surface. And if we’re lucky, we may even see a moonfish, a sea turtle, or perhaps even a whale emerging from the depths. These encounters with nature are one of the most rewarding aspects of life at sea—experiences you’ll carry with you long after the voyage is over.

Sailing to the Cape Verde Islands

Our destination is the island of Sal, one of the stunning Cape Verde Islands, located about 700 nautical miles from Tenerife. With the favorable trade winds and steady conditions, we expect to make swift progress, and depending on the weather, we might even arrive earlier than planned. But no matter the pace, we’ll drop anchor by December 1st in the calm bay of Palmeira, where your sailing adventure will come to an end. After sharing breakfast with your fellow travelers, you’ll disembark and say farewell to the ship and crew. We recommend extending your stay on Sal for a few extra days—there are plenty of accommodations available, and this vibrant island is well worth exploring before you head home.

Becoming Part of the Crew

Aboard the Morgenster, you’re more than just a passenger—you’re an integral part of the crew. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or new to the experience, you’ll have the chance to actively participate in sailing the ship. You’ll be assigned to a watch and receive guidance on how to steer, hoist the sails, and navigate. The crew will also instruct you on how to assist both yourself and your fellow travelers in everyday life aboard the ship, as well as in emergency situations. No prior sailing experience is necessary, and the crew is always happy to teach you the ropes—literally! From learning how to handle the various lines, halyards, and sheets, to getting a feel for the rhythm of life at sea, you’ll quickly find your place on board.

Most of our guests find the experience of working together as a team to be incredibly rewarding, but your level of involvement is entirely up to you. The Morgenster thrives in the long ocean swells between the Cape Verde Islands, and the constant trade winds (force 4 to 6 Beaufort) ensure smooth sailing. These waters are relatively quiet, with only the occasional sighting of a small fishing boat or cargo ship in the distance, allowing you to fully appreciate the solitude and beauty of the open ocean.

A Unique Sailing Experience

Sailing between Tenerife and Cape Verde on a traditional square-rigged tall ship is an experience like no other. Whether you’re gazing at the horizon in search of marine wildlife, working alongside the crew, or simply enjoying the warm winds on deck, every moment on the Morgenster is an opportunity to connect with the sea. This adventure is perfect for both seasoned sailors and those who have never set foot on a tall ship before. Ready to join us on this incredible journey? The sea is calling, and we’re ready to welcome you aboard.
